What is the Difference?

Devoting four or more years of our lives to experience college life and academics simply isn’t realistic or financially possible for many people. Business and Community Solutions, the customized training, workforce development and continuing education (non-credit) division of Northeast Iowa Community College, understands this. Your time is valuable and, often, one course or short-term training program may be all you need to advance your career and increase your income.

These non-credit courses include a variety of affordable, quality courses to obtain or advance your skills in the areas of career development, computer technology, licensure and recertification, transportation, healthcare, trades and industry, adult education and literacy, or personal interests. In fact, one in 10 northeast Iowa residents aged 18-65 were served by the College in 2016-2017, many through Business and Community Solutions’ diverse offerings.

Business and Community Solutions also offers 20 Career Pathway Certificates. These certifications are designed to develop the skills of community members to gain entry-level positions in high-demand occupations. Earning a Career Pathway Certificate in four to nine months will qualify students for in-demand healthcare careers, such as Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). The CNA option was the perfect fit for Hope Searles after she completed her High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) at the College.

“I knew Northeast Iowa Community College was a good school and that they were welcoming, so I enrolled in the CNA program. My favorite part about being a CNA in a long-term care facility is being close to the residents – they know me. They become like family because you spend so much time with them,” Searles expressed. “I love my job. I feel better that I’m changing someone’s life for the better. It reminds me why I am a CNA, why I do this as a career.”

Searles advanced professionally and found well-paying employment after completing a Career Pathway Certificate. She has also completed a prerequisite for entry into the College’s Practical Nursing diploma (academic credit) program, if she decides to advance her career.

Business and Community Solutions offers many options for certification and licensure, depending on your individual needs. You can complete continuing education classes to become a licensed Realtor in the State of Iowa, earn your coaching authorization to coach football, softball, volleyball or other school sports, or take advanced Adobe Illustrator classes to enhance your graphic design skills.

Business and Community Solutions also offers Continuing Education Hours/Units (CEHs/CEUs) to complete your professional development requirements in real estate, cosmetology, plumbing and electrical, healthcare and more!
