NICC_travelSince 2008, Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) students have bypassed costly and overrated spring break trips to South Padre Island and Daytona Beach to instead participate in the College’s annual weeklong service learning trip. These experiences are a window to the world beyond northeast Iowa; teaching students how to make an impact, serve others and truly make a difference.

“The trip to Boston was an eye-opening experience. I thought I had empathy, but after going on this trip, I realized I can definitely do more and have a different outlook,” said Brianna Lee, a 2014 Dairy Science graduate.

NICC students have served a variety of non-profit organizations and charitable causes through the Center for Student Missions (CSM). From 2008 – 2016, the CSM community service program has coordinated the College service trips to Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, Washington, D.C, Boston and Houston.

Through service learning, students learn about themselves, how their actions impact others, enhance their problem-solving skills and develop a stronger sense of empathy and an understanding of the world outside of which they are familiar.

Become a leader, serve others and make an impact. It’s Your Time. Be Bold.

The World Beyond Northeast Iowa: Study Abroad

Sometimes the most effective and meaningful way to learn about another culture and its language is to immerse yourself in it – to jump right in. Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) provides opportunities for students and community members to travel and expand their world view.

Students and community members who participated in the 2015 trip to London, Paris and Rome described their experiences as eye-opening and life-changing. Two faculty leaders facilitated learning opportunities, such as a photography class and foreign language, that helped make their trip unforgettable.

“Going on an educational tour of the Vatican, seeing the lush gardens there and the artwork of Raphael and Michelangelo was amazing. I think it’s awesome that a community college like NICC is able to offer this for the community,” explained Caitlin Bishop, a May 2015 graduate.

Be Bold. See the World.
