Enrolling in a degree, diploma, certificate or career pathway certificate at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is a matter of tradition for many families in northeast Iowa and in the neighboring states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.
NICC is the college of choice for families in the region, with generations of family, sometimes at the same time, attending the College to complete a degree affordably, make strong personal connections with faculty and staff, and then continue on to successful professional and academic careers after graduation.
Attending NICC is the family-friendly option for many students, and graduates, such as Janice Holthaus of Preston, Minn., earned three credentials from the College and three of her four children followed in her footsteps. Holthaus received a Secretarial diploma in 1976, a diploma in Medical Transcriptionist in 2000 and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Technology in 2001.
Two of her daughters and a son also enrolled at the College. Lynnette earned an Associate Degree Nursing in 2003, Allison graduated from the Human Services program in 2009 and Mitchell is a 2010 graduate of the Dairy Science program.
“As an alum and parent of three children that attended Northeast Iowa Community College, we had a very positive experience. At NICC, you’re treated like family, and we are grateful for the support that ensured my children were successful and found rewarding careers,” Janice Holthaus recalled. “The College made a difference in all of our lives.”
Recent graduates of the College also found that the close interaction with faculty and staff helps to form strong bonds that influence their academic, social and future career success.
Maria Garcia, a fall 2015 Associate of Arts graduate with an emphasis in Business Administration, served as the president of the leadership organization iMPACT at the Calmar campus. As the first member of her family to attend college and graduate from high school, Garcia expects her four siblings to attend and find success at NICC.
“Northeast Iowa Community College has opened up more doors for me. With the help of all of my instructors and all the amazing people I have met, my life has changed for the better,” said Garcia, who grew up in Maynard and is a 2012 graduate of West Central High School. “NICC has given me many opportunities to meet people and also, showed me that we are like a family. If you need help, help and support will be given to you.”
Start your own family tradition by enrolling at NICC and receive a personalized college education, form lifelong friendships and enhance your career potential.
