John and Mabel Heinen’s busy lives and the demands of work may not have afforded them the opportunity to attend college and earn a degree. Knowing that others would benefit from these opportunities, the couple included a planned gift for Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) in their estate plans.

The Heinen’s endowment created many success stories: for students who received this financial support and for graduates who went on to successful professional careers.

Their generosity created the John and Mabel Heinen Family Endowment to provide scholarships for students with financial need. This endowment has made a lasting impact on the lives of hundreds of NICC students who, without this support, may not have had the financial resources to earn their college degree. The endowment will continue to have this same impact on NICC students for years to come.

Established in 1999, this gift has grown to a current scholarship endowment of $389,600. This gift has provided more than 520 scholarship awards totaling $234,000, and the scholarships are open to students in any NICC credit program.

While in Dubuque, John worked as a professional carpenter, and Mabel worked at the Dubuque Packing Company. Mabel attended an NICC-sponsored event at the Peosta campus, the popular Senior Fest held each year, and learned about the all-ages support and educational programs that two-year colleges like NICC offer to their local communities.

The Heinen’s endowment created many success stories: for students who received this financial support and for graduates who went on to successful professional careers.

Gifts to NICC students, such as the John and Mabel Heinen Family Endowment, continue to provide opportunities for community members whose plans include a college education.
